Clovelly Apartment

Build: MJP Projects

Completed: 2024

A home with a view, and now, a point of view.

The Details

The view did all the talking. Perched above the Clovelly coastline with sweeping ocean outlooks, the apartment had everything going for it from the outside. Inside was a different story. The kitchen was closed off from the living area, shut away from the light and the view it should have been framing. The interiors had no clear point of view — nothing that said who lived there or how. The home was well-located and underdelivering on every other front.

  • Coastal apartment, Clovelly NSW

  • Entertainer Rob Mills and journalist, author Georgie Tunny

  • Full-service interior design + styling

  • Full cosmetic renovation

  • Kitchen opened to living and ocean views, full colour-drenching in muddy pink, hand-glazed ocean blue bathrooms, chevron parquetry throughout, aged copper tapware, styled for real life

“The apartment just feels drab and disconnected. We really want to make the most of that magnificent ocean view.”

The view was never the problem. Sweeping ocean outlooks from every angle, the drama was all outside. Inside, the home had no point of view of its own. Rob wanted grounded and calm. Georgie wanted expressive mid-century colour. The brief was to let both sensibilities sit together without compromise: open the floor plan, introduce colour with courage, and shape a home that actually felt like the people who lived in it. Coastal, yes. But specific. Theirs.

The Solutions

  • New opening created between kitchen and living area - connected the space to natural light and ocean views

  • Full colour-drenching in soft, muddied pink: walls, ceilings, joinery throughout main living areas

  • Hand-glazed ocean blue tiles wrapping bathrooms floor to ceiling - a direct response to the location

  • Chevron parquetry flooring linking all spaces with quiet rhythm

  • Oversized vanity with lighting designed around Georgie's on-camera work requirements

  • Aged copper tapware for warmth and patina

  • Ample bathroom storage integrated without compromising the aesthetic

  • Full interior styling - books, linen, objects, records - layered to feel lived-in, not dressed

Design Philosophy

The design decisions here were about specificity, not decoration. Two distinct personalities needed to coexist in the same space without either one winning. The fix wasn't to neutralise both - it was to find the shared language: coast, colour, ease. Colour-drenching did what feature walls can't: it committed. The kitchen opening did what furniture rearrangement can't: it changed how the home breathes. Every decision was calibrated to the clients and the location, not to a style category.

Kitchen

Before

Kitchen closed off from the living area. Cut off from natural light and the view.

After

New opening between kitchen and living - the space now reads as one. The kitchen became the social hub it always should have been. The ocean is in frame from the bench.

Bathroom

Before

Functional. Generic.

After

Hand-glazed ocean blue tiles from floor to ceiling - a direct material echo of the coastline outside. Oversized vanity with lighting considered for on-camera use. Aged copper tapware. Storage integrated throughout. Brave on first description, obvious once you're standing in it.

Living

Before

A home that fell flat, didn't feel theirs.

After

Styled for real life - records on the shelf, books left out, linen draped rather than folded. Rob and Georgie's personalities are in every corner, but nothing is precious. Relaxed, confident, quietly layered.

THE RESULT

Two distinct voices. One coherent home. Clovelly Court is what happens when the brief is taken seriously - not softened into something safe, but pushed into something specific. The colour holds. The layout works. The styling makes it feel like theirs from the first photo. A home that was always well-located now knows exactly what it is.
